On Friday, November 23nd, Raed Fares - a friend of ours and a hero of the Syrian revolution - was assassinated in northern Syria by masked gunmen suspected of being affiliated with al-Qaeda.
This episode features an interview we recorded with him at the Oslo Freedom Forum in 2017, in which he told us what the Syrian revolution meant to him, and why he would not give up hope.
Raed will be remembered forever as a visionary, and this interview shows why.
Raed Fares’s Oslo Freedom Forum speech, which is well-worth a watch.
You can also read Iyad’s obituary of Raed in the Washington Post.
This interview is also available on our podcast, with extended comments from Iyad and Ahmed:
The Arab Tyrant Manual is an independent online publishing platform focused on freedom, human rights and the fight against all forms of authoritarianism globally –social, political or religious. We try to deeply understand authoritarianism, the logic and incentives behind it, and the strategies and tactics that authoritarians use, in order to understand why what’s in the news is happening, and to better equip ourselves to resist.
